And now, RACA is pleased to congratulate its partner on achieving a record in the Guinness World Records. A team of scientists from the University of São Paulo (USP), led by Dr. Dan Palcu from the Oceanographic Institute, has made a groundbreaking discovery that has earned a place in the Guinness World Records: Paratethys, the largest lake to have ever existed on Earth. This marks the first time USP has been listed as a record holder.
Paratethys, which existed approximately 11 million years ago, covered a colossal area of 2.8 million square kilometers, making it over 10 times larger than all freshwater and saltwater lakes combined in the world today.
The volume of water in Paratethys was 1.8 million cubic kilometers, equivalent to 18 times the volume of the Black Sea.According to Dr. Palcu’s research, Paratethys harbored a unique fauna, with several species never before recorded elsewhere. Among them, the Cetotherium riabinini stands out as the smallest whale ever recorded.
