In a thought-provoking article, Roberta Isfer, Director of Innovation for Visa in Latin America and the Caribbean, shed light on the challenges and potential of the Metaverse. As emerging technologies gain traction and scale, our identities, properties, and even how we relate and conduct transactions are on the verge of significant transformation.

At USM, we are fully aware of the challenges and potential of the Metaverse, as described by Visa’s Director. We understand the hurdles that lie ahead, which is why we are tirelessly building a robust ecosystem. Here, we invite people to embark on a journey where their creativity and imagination can flourish, enabling them to create a brighter and more inclusive world for all.

Before delving into USM’s vision, it’s crucial to distinguish between Web 3.0 and the Metaverse, two terms often intertwined. Web 3.0 refers to the underlying infrastructure and technology driving the next iteration of the Internet. On the other hand, the Metaverse leverages these innovations to offer immersive experiences that introduce new forms of interaction, commerce, and financial transactions.

Just as Web 1.0 revolutionized access to information and 2.0 transformed content creation and online interactions, Web 3.0 has the potential to empower users with transparency, ownership, and portability of digital assets. This transition could replace centralized corporate platforms with open protocols and community-managed decentralized networks, merging Web 1.0’s open infrastructure with Web 2.0’s participatory nature.

At the core of this new digital domain lies the transformation of identity, ownership, privacy, and digital asset management. By adopting a peer-to-peer approach, Web 3.0 harnesses emerging technologies like tokens and blockchain to establish trust-based relationships through open-source, immutable, and decentralized transactions.

One of the main challenges is digital identity governance. Currently, there’s no unified protocol for defining and managing online identities. Web 3.0 envisions users implementing new data storage methods, security protocols, and ownership, thereby creating a more transparent and secure internet for all through cryptographic identity credentials.

Tokenized economies, based on the ownership of digital assets represented by tokens, are at the heart of discussions surrounding Web 3.0. This approach offers new opportunities to monetize creators’ and users’ activities and contributions, granting them greater control over their intrinsic value.

In this era of unprecedented change, the USM ecosystem is creating an environment where individuals can thrive. We embrace the challenges of Web3 and the Metaverse, providing a platform where people are encouraged to freely explore their imagination and creativity. Here, they can contribute to the creation of a better, more inclusive, and dynamic world.
